ARTS 266Project 1: The Body
P1: Music on Repeat
Balu is my roommates and my music that we drink to when it's sunny outside. We blast the speakers and just vibe. The P1 giant wooden-and-metal hand was a project that nearly took everything out of me physically and emotionally, so this music was my saving grace when I needed to blow off steam…
Hand of a Fading Soul
This piece represents my grandfather's hand and the impact he has had on my life through his words of wisdom and love.
18 feet of water-treated pine 4x4 wood that was cut into 4-inch cubic squares, glued together to match the form of my left hand, ground down over 20 hours to follow the depth of a palm and callosities and knuckles, mounted to a metal radius and ulna bone plate, sanded, then stained.
The rings of the wood resemble the fingerprints and palm rings that are on our hands. It conveys a sense of age and maturity, as well as its visual appeal on its own.
The Hand28 steel rods cut and welded to a 1/4 inch steel plate, welded with a MIG welder, ground down over 30 hours with the combination of angle grinders and pneumatic tools.
The steel forearm bones represent strength and support.
The BonesA plant that grows on the crevices of trees, attached by being impaled and supported by wooden dowels, accompanied by the bark it was originally planted in.
The dying plant represents the intertwined aspects of a person's soul attached to their body, which can reach out and touch the viewer. It is fading and will eventually die as all things do. But the way a soul touches you will never spiritually die.
